I SEE US

“Okay.” Jessica waited.

“The thing Emily and I weren’t on the same page about was kids,” Nikki began. “All along I thought she wanted to have a family and when it came time for me to start trying to get pregnant, she balked.”

“Oh no.”

“The thing is, just because we broke up didn’t mean I couldn’t still get pregnant. I was thirty-five at the time and I didn’t want to wait any longer,” Nikki stated.

Jessica’s eyebrows climbed up her forehead. “And?”

Nikki studied Jessica’s face then said, “I have a daughter.”

Jessica’s eyes widened. “You do? How wonderful!”

“You just said you want to be with me, but does that change because I have a kid?” Nikki asked carefully. “I should’ve told you before all of this.” She looked down at their naked bodies. “But honestly, Jess, I wasn’t sure how you’d react and I wanted to be with you even if it was just this one time.”

Jessica smiled at Nikki. “Just yesterday, the all-seeing Celeste saw me with my own family.”

Nikki’s heart pounded and she knew hope covered her face. “Does that mean you want to be with me and my daughter?”

Jessica nodded. “Is that too overwhelming for you?”

Nikki laughed then leaned down and kissed Jessica firmly. “I know you like kids, but this is asking more than just being an aunt.”

“What’s your daughter’s name? How old is she?”

“She’s six months old and her name is Edie, short for Edith,” Nikki said.

Jessica tilted her head. “Is she named for Edie Windsor, the LGBTQ pioneer?”

Nikki nodded. “I’ll be married someday because she chose to fight for her relationship.”

Jessica smiled. “You want to get married? Some people don’t believe in it anymore.”

“I know. But my mom and dad were happily married and raised me and my sibs together in love. I saw their example and wanted that for me and now for Edie. Do you believe in marriage?”

“I do for me. Does that mean we share the same view?”

Nikki grinned. “It does. But do we share the same view as far as kids go?”

“Hmm,” Jessica furrowed her brow, but her eyes sparkled. “Do you want more children?”

“I’m open.”

“Because as I told you yesterday, I’m not having a baby.”

“Do you not want to carry a baby?”

“I actually had tests done before I left London and it would be very difficult for me to get pregnant.”

“But as I said yesterday, there are other ways to have a family.”

Jessica gave Nikki the most beautiful smile. “It seems that you see what I see on the important things that matter.”

Nikki returned her smile. “It does. Are you sure?”

“Let me show you how sure I am,” Jessica said, pushing Nikki onto her back.
